Is Reading Fiction Important?

What comes to your mind when I say “traveling”? perhaps you are thinking of going to some archipelagoes or continents in the world. But, do you believe it when I say you can travel to distant time (future or past) or you can travel to some other continents without moving your feet and remain seated in the confinement of your cozy house? You can call it magic. The magic of books.

Low Interest of Reading

J.K. Rowling, the famed and highly praised author in the world, once said,

“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.”

Some people find reading as a time-consuming activity that provides nothing. Some people think that reading is boring. Some people think that reading is a scary activity. Some people also think when it comes to reading; thus, it means reading text books or educational books. However, there is no such thing as educational books and not educational books. All books are educational. Whether they are fiction or non-fiction. Books are meant to entertain and also to educate people.  Reading should not be synonymous with scary, boring or a futile activity. It is rooted back from childhood, how a child thinks reading is something they have to do, whether they like or not. This is when the low interest of reading is created in the mind. Instead of choosing the suitable book that matches with the kid’s interest, they are forced instead to read it regardless of what they might feel. Oftentimes, fiction is regarded as unimportant, too fantastical and provide no knowledge or benefits.

If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales (Albert Einstein).
