College Personal Statement: Tips for Efficient, Optimal Writing

Chances are, your days are already pretty packed: classes, extracurriculars, seeing friends, spending time with family… and now throw on top of that applying to college. Senior year can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to writing your admission essays. And while you’ve certainly written essays on the Civil War, Einstein, or plant biology, a personal essay is a different animal.

Instead of trying to brainstorm an essay that matches an existing question from your school of choice, try working backward. Think of a personal experience that moved you or changed you … then tailor that to answer the question. Let’s say you want to write about your experience playing the flute for the first time with a large orchestra. This story answers a lot of possible essay questions: what was a personal activity of special significance, or an accomplishment you are proud of—even an adversity you have dealt with. This one story can be tweaked into the many essays your colleges require.

It’s great to get feedback from a friend or a teacher on a draft you’ve written, but don’t overdo it. A common mistake is an essay written “by committee” – too many people have read it and the writer is trying to please too many different opinions.  In the end, you’re left with an essay with all the life sucked out of it. Find one person you trust—preferably not a family member or friend—and let that individual be your sounding board.

Make sure to set aside a little bit of time every day to work on your essay. It’s better to spend 20 minutes on it daily than 10 hours right before it’s due. You’ll find that visiting it every day will help your ideas flow and connect better, give you perspective on what you’ve already written, and reduce the chances of sloppy mistakes.

College Admission Essays: How Much Do They Matter?

A big myth about college applications: if your grades are poor, your SATs below average, and your list of extracurriculars nonexistent, you can still knock it out of the park with a stellar admission essays.

False! It’s been said that a great admission essays will heal the sick but won’t raise the dead. Ultimately, admissions officers are looking for students who’ve already proven they can be citizens of a larger intellectual and social community—students who have proven through grades, test scores, and recommendations that they can not only handle college but can also thrive there. So coming up with a last-minute mind-blowing essay to right the rest of your academic wrongs isn’t realistic.

That said, admission essays are an increasingly crucial part of the admissions process and many times can make the difference between an acceptance or rejection for students who are on the fence.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is to use the essay as a tool to show a different part of you. If your application already includes lists of homeless shelters where you volunteered and a curriculum heavy in math, don’t talk about that one time you taught a homeless person how to add. Talk about something completely different, something that will give admissions officers yet another glimpse of who you are.

And while almost any essay topic can work, any topic can also fail. Many students make the mistake of starting with too broad a focus. By the time you’re into the meat of the story, you’re out of word count. So cut to the chase. Don’t start with “I have always enjoyed science.” Start with “As soon as I cut that frog open I knew I wanted to be a biologist.”

Keep it lively, keep it personal, and, if possible, make them laugh. Admissions officers remember a smart, funny essay the same way we remember a good joke. It makes us want to pass it on and tell it again. That’s the way a good essay should be. And that’s a surefire way to make your essay matter

How to Choose a Bike for a Three-Year-Old Child

Choosing bicycle for kids can be a hard task for parents, as we didn’t have such a wide variety of models in our childhood. Recently I chose a bicycle for my three-years-old niece. I studied a huge amount of information beforehand, and as a result, the bike I’ve chosen suited the child perfectly.

Among the numerous articles, I found this one especially helpful, as it contains a comparative table, reviews of popular bikes for three-years-old kids and buyer’s guide. In this post I'd like to share my experience with the readers. So, which characteristics should you pay attention to when choosing a bike for kids?

There are bikes for boys and for girls. The main difference is the height of the frame. The frame on the girls’ bikes is significantly lower. But it doesn’t mean that it is very high on the boys’ bikes. The frame will be tilted downwards in any case.

Frame and Fork Material

Steel: heavier and cheaper material. The use of steel can increase the general weight of the bike by 4.5 — 6.5 pounds.

Aluminum: Slightly more expensive, but much lighter material.

Foot brakes: Can become the first good brakes for the child until they learn to back-pedal with the help of handles on the steering wheel. In general, this brake is enough for kids, though dubbing it in the form of the front brake is very useful.

Disc brakes: A choice for those who want the best options. They stop the bike better and faster, it is more easy to press the brake handle. They also are more useful in bad/sludge weather.

Number of Speeds

A large number of speeds isn’t always good. Usually a child doesn’t need more than 7 types. Some people even choose bikes with 1 speed type so that the child can’t break anything. Kids also don’t quite understand how to use speeds. The less speeds there are, the lighter the bike is. But if the child will have a lot of uphills and downhills on their way, speeds can be very helpful.

Children’s bicycles can often be equipped with boings. Overall, they will be quite helpful with absorbing the bumps in the steering wheel. But in most cases, it is not necessary for riding in the city. The quality of such boings is usually very low.

According to Cute Little Darling, the lighter the bike is, the easier it is for parents to carry it and for kids to use it. Safety also depends on it. In general, all the bikes weight about the same. So in terms of weight, pay attention to the frame and fork material (aluminum is lighter, steel is heavier) and also to the presence of additional accessories (that can make it heavier).

Everything that you want may be installed on the bike on the factory or you can buy it later yourself: fenders, bell, bottle, soft patches for protection, parking support, chain guard, additional small wheels.

Bicycle Adjustments

For more comfort, don’t forget to adjust the position and height of the seat, as well as position and height of the steering wheel (but it is possible only on very few types of bikes, as there is no need in it in the bicycles of the right size).

That’s it! Now you can choose your child the perfect bike as a real professional.

How to Cite a Research Paper in APA?

Being successful in academics is quite an onerous task. To be that, you have to embrace the formal tone and accuracy while elaborating your research results through writing. There is a specific procedure that you have to implement in your research paper writing. Among all the existing formats, APA is known to be the best that expresses the research ideas prominently.

APA, American Psychological Association, came into an appearance by numerous businessmen, psychologists, and anthropologists in 1929. This particular formatting style has been considered as the best scientific writing style for easing the research analyzation process for the readers. There are a few unambiguous citation rules for the APA research paper presentation.

Using Short Quotations

In order to present a perfect research paper, you need to understand the usage of short quotations while citing text in an APA research paper. It has been suggested by the best essay writing services and this way you can evidently prove your rationale by involving some pragmatic data.

Like Leo Buscaglia said, “Change is the end result of all true learning”.

A short quotation has to be very crisp, and the genius way to place it is at the beginning of the paper. Use it as a simple phrase or make it your introductory line to prove a context or use it as a stable weapon for explaining your research ideas. Additionally, don’t forget to begin and end the quotations with the quotation marks and illustrate the Author’s introduction as a signal phrase or a pre-quotation phrase.

Using Long/Block Quotations

These quotations generally exceed 40 words and have a few distinctive rules of presentation. Take a look at the example and figure out the points explained below.

  • No quotation mark before or after the block quotation.
  • Require no explanation at the beginning and start with its own form.
  • A long quotation is sectioned by 0.5 inches and requires double spacing before starting a fresh paragraph.
  • Include citation right after the ending line of the long quotation, and place punctuation before citing.

In case you’re unsure about citing the short quotations, seeking help from a global assignment help service provider can be a safe option for you.

Citing Authors in an APA Research Paper

The best way to make your research paper more credible is to cite authors. Simply include the surname of the concerned author and the year of publication. In case you are aiming to make a direct citation, mentioning the page number can be another great option for you. In another case, if the name of the author is not mentioned in the sentence, place it at the sharp end.

Remember, if you have involved two authors in your paper, you have to make an in-text citation which should reflect both their names with an ampersand in between. Similarly, if there are many writers involved in your writing, cite them at first by placing a comma in between each, and by placing an ampersand in between the last two. Later on, when you are making the in-text citations again, simply include the first author’s name followed by “et al”, and write the year of publication.

Ending Note

Mostly, APA style is endorsed in businesses, schools, colleges, economics, social science, and other educational fields. Approaching a professional writer by ordering, “write my paper” is quite easy, but learning things on your own can be better for giving further explanations regarding your research paper. Citing a research paper is a practical form of evidence that the official and reliable resources have been involved in your research analyses. Moreover, it will ensure that your work is not plagiarized.

Five Reliable Tips on How You Can Write an Excellent Essay

Writing an essay is an involving activity. Students are expected to produce top-notch essays in order to get high scores. Get tips on how to write a good piece.

How to Write a Good Essay

An essay is an evaluation tool used by the instructors and lectures to gauge the level of seriousness and commitment of the learners. It is therefore important that the learners produce high-quality papers. The scores from the essays contribute to their general scores. Consider the following for your piece:

  • Outlining
  • Structuring
  • Conclusion
  • Thesis statement
  • Proofreading

Have an Essay Outline

Ensure you have an outline before you start writing the essay. A good outline will give you a good essay structure. It will also help you write the ideas in a flowing sequence. Such a sequence will catch the attention of the reader.

Good Essay Structure

The essay is simply putting a set of ideas into some particular arguments. The structure of the essay is very essential because it should be organized to enable your ideas to flow smoothly. It is advisable to start with weightier information as you move to less weighty points. An essay has three basic parts; the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The body can be divided into different sub-sections depending on the points or topics of argument or discussion. You can also have the background information apart from the introduction. The introduction should be catchy. It is basically the overall overview of the essay.

Your essay should have a thesis statement.

Develop Your Thesis

A good thesis will prompt the reader to read up to the end of the paper. Let your thesis have two parts. The first part should tell the reader about your argument; what do you want to say or what argument do you hold? The second part of the thesis should send a message on how you plan to present your argument. Make your thesis stand out. It is advisable to write it at the end of the introduction paragraph. It will then stick in the mind of the reader. Make your thesis clear and precise.

How Do You Conclude the Essay?

The conclusion is the last opportunity a writer has to persuade the reader to accept his or her argument. Linking the first paragraph with the last one can help you create a good conclusion. The conclusion should not be too short, it is basically a summary. Like in any speech, the last touchy statements are always remembered by the audience. You, therefore, need to give it a good final statement that will stick in the minds of the readers. Remember, it must be relevant to the essay.

Revise/Proofread the Essay

After writing the essay, relax and take some time before you revise it. Have someone read the draft and help you revise. All you need to do is defend your argument verbally. This will help them know whether you went off track or not. If the thesis and the arguments are clear, he or she should be able to tell you.

Why Photography Beginners should go for DSLR cameras?

DSLR Camera

Many people who are interested in photography. Some are interested in taking it as their passion, whereas others are looking for a career in this field. So, all of them have the same question in their mind, which camera should I use as a beginner? My answer to this would be an entry-level DSLR camera. Now, you would be thinking, Why a DSLR camera, why not a bridge camera or a high-end DSLR camera?

Let us find out the answer to all these questions.

In the beginning stage of photography, you should learn to operate the camera in manual mode. I have seen many photographers using the semi-automatic modes like the Aperture priority mode or shutter priority mode and the Automatic modes in cameras. If you continue using these modes, then you will never learn photography.

Some photographers don’t want to take risk initially by using manual mode. You will fail when you start with manual mode. No need to worry in that case. Making mistakes in the initial stage is right for you. You need to learn from these mistakes to be a better photographer.

If you use semi-automatic mode, you can fail in tricky lighting conditions. You may end up in an Underexposed or overexposed image. It is because you have let the full control to your camera and the camera metering had failed due to the tricky lighting. But, if you were using Manual mode, then you could have captured the scene with the right exposure settings.

DSLR camera gives you the ability to learn photography through its manual mode. Most of the point and shoot camera lacks this feature. So, you will never learn when you use a point and shoot camera. So, if you buy an entry-level DSLR camera, then you can explore it to the maximum and learn all the basics of photography like exposure settings (Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO), white balance settings, ability to capture in RAW format, basics of post processing.

Once you master manual mode in camera, then you can photograph in any lighting conditions. You need a good practice to get a good grip on the manual mode.

If you go for a high-end camera, then you need to invest a lot. Later, if you lose interest in photography, then you would have to bear the loss. So, better start with an entry level DSLR camera and later if you are still interested in photography you can upgrade your camera gear.
