Walmart announced that members of its Walmart+ program can access a 10-cent discount on gas at 14,000 fueling stations in 48 states.
The discount expands past the company’s own stations, reaching participating Exxon and Mobil locations.
“Ninety-one percent of our customers are aware of the increased prices at the pump and nearly half of those told us they are changing behaviors because of them,” senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+ Chris Cracchiolo said in a press release. “More access to a bigger discount will make a difference for our customers.”
At Walmart and Murphy USA stations, customers can expect to save between 5 and 10 cents, based on differing regulations by state.
“We know that families want to maximize their budgets and look forward to helping them do just that while filling up with Synergy fuel technology that helps improve fuel economy, protect engines and enables better vehicle responsiveness,” ExxonMobil U.S. marketing manager Bill Barenborg said.
Several oil and gas companies also offer rewards programs for gas stations, including ExxonMobil’s Rewards+ program. Other prominent programs include Shell Fuel Rewards, BPme Rewards and Circle K Easy Rewards.
At publication time, the national average price for a gallon of gas was $4.134, according to AAA. A year ago, that average price was $2.885.
Gas prices shot up over the last few months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine rattled the markets about the global supply of oil. The U.S. gets eight percent of its imported oil from Russia.
The price hike has also led to a rise in interest in electric vehicles (EV), though ongoing supply chain constraints can mean longer waiting times for deliveries of EVs and many dealers have put a premium on their MSRPs in some markets.
In September 2020, Walmart rolled out Walmart+ to provide members with higher levels of convenience for in-store and online shopping. Along with the fuel discount, customers can get free delivery depending on the area, free shipping on some items, prescription drug discounts, and the ability to scan and pay for items while shopping, bypassing the checkout line.
A Walmart+ membership costs $12.95 per month or $98 per year.
