Thomas Tuchel confirms Antonio Rudiger exit at End of Season

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has finally confirmed Antonio Rudiger’s future at Stamford Bridge. The German tactician confirmed his team will leave Chelsea at the end of the season.

As is well known, Rudiger is under contract with the Blues until June 30, 2022. Chelsea failed to reach a new agreement with the 29-year-old defender. As a result, Rudiger had to go to another club.

The player’s agent has reportedly held talks with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United (MU) regarding a potential summer transfer. Rudiger’s transfer plan was also announced after Chelsea’s match against West Ham which ended 1–0 in favor of the Blues.

“(Regarding) Toni, the media is talking about it. His situation indicates that he wants to leave the club. He told this a few days ago in a private conversation,” Tuchel said on Sunday (4/24/2022) as reported by Metro.

Tuchel regretted the British government’s sanctions, which made it unable to extend Rudiger’s stay. In fact, the Blues should still have time and opportunity to offer a new deal to the player.

“We have given everything, both me and the club, but we can’t fight anymore because of the sanctions. (Without sanctions), we at least had a chance to try, (but) we couldn’t do anything for weeks,” continued the 48-year-old coach.

For information, Chelsea has been sanctioned by the British government because its owner, Roman Abramovich, is accused of having close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This condition prevented the Blues from buying and extending player contracts.

The club based at Stamford Bridge is also in danger of falling into poverty. They are prohibited from selling official club souvenirs and cannot sell tickets for home matches. As for the Chelsea audience at Stamford Bridge, only those who have purchased a canal ticket since the start of the season.

Antonio Rudiger is one of Chelsea’s mainstay players at Stamford Bridge. He has transformed into a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, since joining from AS Roma in 2017.

Rudiger is considered to have an important role at the back, which helped lead Chelsea to lift the Champions League trophy last season. No wonder Rudiger’s departure from Stamford Bridge will cause a big loss for the Blues.

“In terms of character and personality, he (Antonio Rudiger) is a key figure, he will stay like that until the end of the season. Of course it’s a shame (Rudiger had to leave Chelsea),” said Tuchel, as reported by Metro.

According to Tuchel, Rudiger not only plays a role on the gridiron, but also has a big influence in the dressing room. This is what makes the coach feel lost if Rudiger completes his move from Stamford Bridge.

“He has a huge influence in the dressing room. He is a person who gives courage to others. He is respected by everyone. He was a top defender throughout the last year and a half of his career. I respect what he does,” said the former PSG coach.

Chelsea actually did not want to lose Rudiger just like that. The Daily Express report in February claimed that the Blues had tried to offer a new contract to thwart the transfer of their flagship defender.

The agreement will make Rudiger’s salary increase by 40 thousand pounds compared to his current fee which reaches 100,000 pounds. Unfortunately, the former AS Roma player refused a new deal from Chelsea.

The Blues are again trying their luck with an informal bid that is approaching the £200,000-a-week mark. However, these efforts are still not enough to make Rudiger sign a new contract.

Rudiger actually admitted that he was happy to be at Chelsea. However, the Germany international hopes the club can pay him more – around £225,000 per week – if he wants him to stay in West London.

“I feel great here, I’ve always said that. I think (from) the way I play, you can see that I’m happy here. However, there are other people who also have to make decisions,” he told The Athletic in February, as quoted by Metro.

Thomas Tuchel Doubts Chelsea Can Bring Declan Rice

Comments Off on Thomas Tuchel Doubts Chelsea Can Bring Declan Rice

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel does not believe his club can afford West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. The reason is, Roman Abramovich, who has been the owner of the Blues, can no longer finance them.

Reporting from the Mirror, Chelsea is a big fan of Rice. The player who had studied at the Blues academy has shown rapid development with West Ham. He is also believed to be a regular player in the England squad under Gareth Southgate.

The Blues have long been linked with Rice. English League giant Manchester United (MU) was also reportedly interested in hiring the services of the 23-year-old player. Unfortunately, Rice cannot be bought cheaply.

West Ham boss David Moyes believes Rice’s departure will cost more than £150m. The £100 million label pinned on his team last season is still considered too cheap.

“The first thing (I) have to say is he (Declan Rice) is not for sale. If you are interested, it (the price) will be greater. One hundred (million pounds) was cheap last season. One hundred and fifty (£million) would be the minimum price, but he is not for sale,” Moyes said as quoted by the Daily Mail earlier this month.

The fee is no doubt too expensive for Chelsea. Moreover, the Blues are currently in crisis as a result of the British government’s sanctions against Russian conglomerate Roman Abramovich.

“As you know, we don’t usually talk about other players. The current situation gives me a bit of an advantage because we can’t even buy, sell or do (whatever) players, so there’s nothing to think about,” Tuchel said when asked about the potential transfer of Declan Rice, as reported by the Mirror.

Apart from that, Tuchel did not deny that Declan Rice is a great player. The German manager thinks Rice has succeeded in proving his existence as one of the important players in the squad.

“I rate him (Declan Rice) very highly. Not only because he seems like a good person – everyone from the Chelsea academy says it – but also because he (successfully) proves that. This is the most important thing,” he explained, as quoted by the Mirror.

“He’s the captain, he plays responsibly, he’s very physical. He is (also) a strategically minded player. A key figure for his team. (He is) strong at set pieces. I don’t think it’s a surprise, everyone can see it,” Tuchel said of Declan Rice.

Rice is indeed a crucial player in the West Ham squad. He helped The Hammers become one of the teams competing for the top four positions in the English League. Meanwhile, West Ham is currently in seventh place in the standings with 52 points, eight points behind Arsenal in the top four.

With the England national team, Rice also appeared impressive. He successfully recorded 28 matches for The Three Lions on the international stage. He also played an important role behind England’s success in advancing to the Euro 2020 final.

Rice still has a contract at the London Stadium until 2024. However, West Ham want to tie up its star players longer. The club managed by David Moyes has offered Rice a new contract.

Unfortunately, the England international doesn’t want to put up a long-term commitment with the Hammers. In fact, the salary offered by West Ham will make Rice the highest paid player at the London Stadium.

The Mirror reports that West Ham are willing to submit a deal worth £200,000-a-week for the player. However, that was not enough to prolong Rice’s stay. He still refuses to sign a new deal with The Hammers.

Rice is also known to have been on MU’s radar for some time. Quoted from Liputan6.com, the Red Devils want to hire Rice’s services so they can place him as a center in midfield.

The player also gave a worrying signal for the Hammers fans. In the duel against Manchester United in January, the England international openly praised the atmosphere at Old Trafford. He said the MU headquarters was his favorite place to compete.

“I love it. Every time I come to Old Trafford, I always say it’s my favorite place to play. It’s an amazing stadium,” Rice said after his team’s defeat at home to MU on Saturday (22/1/2022).

Premier League hits and misses: How Jurgen Klopp changed the Merseyside derby with the help of Divock Origi?

Premier League hits and misses: How Jurgen Klopp changed the Merseyside derby with the help of Divock Origi | Football News | Sky Sports

Liverpool’s title challenge was in the balance at half-time of the Merseyside derby with Everton’s resistance testing the patience of the Anfield crowd and the temperament of Jurgen Klopp’s players. Liverpool had not even managed a shot on target.

“We were not good in the first half,” said Klopp. “I can admit that easily because it was obvious. Everyone saw it. But that is not good and good in the same moment because if it is 0-0 at half-time you have the chance to improve with simple messages

“That is what we did.”
What were those messages?
It was a crucial team-talk, but what were the details?

“There is one area where we score the goals, that is behind the last line. I don’t think we showed up there at all in the first half, to be honest. We played around the formation.

“It is really difficult, we had 87 per cent possession? I am not sure if that is a new record.

“It is really difficult, especially with the counter-attacking threat they have, because if they have one thing it is speed up front and Anthony Gordon, obviously, is a real talent. He is really quick and we had our problems there.

“So, we showed actually one situation and we stopped it eight times and we showed what we could have done differently in the specific moments. So, accelerations, playing in the half spaces, getting behind the line, chipping balls in behind the line.

“It can happen against a deep formation that you have too many players behind the ball, obviously.

“So, we had a lot of passers but not a lot of receivers. The receivers only really move when they see that they can get the ball. We need these movements without getting the ball to destruct the formation a little bit and we did not do that.

“In football, there is always an explanation for things you don’t do well. That’s the good thing about it. So we improved and then we thought that with the changes that we made we could then give them another task to deal with, adding a second striker in the centre.

“We did not need another build-up player, really, in these moments, we had enough players with the ball in possession.”

Naby Keita was removed. Divock Origi was introduced. It left Liverpool more exposed defensively, with Gordon’s raids down the left proving a source of hope for Everton. It was something Klopp tried to adjust to stop.

“Anthony was on his bike a couple of times and we cannot leave Anthony out there alone, it makes no sense,” he explained.

“We told Trent to play from a little bit deeper and we wanted Fab on that side as well. So we knew where the threat was coming from. We still could not always defend it in the first place, that is how it is.

“But if you don’t take risks you cannot win a football game.”

Klopp’s risks paid off, changing the game. But he credited his players.

“But if Div and Mo don’t see the situation, pass the ball, follow the ball, chip it to the second post and Robbo probably for the first time in the game shows up at the second post, then we are talking about a 0-0. So you need these moments.

“Credit to the boys that they found a way.” So did he.
Adam Bate

For long periods of the Merseyside derby, Everton must have felt like they were the ones tormenting Liverpool, threatening to dash their hopes of winning the Premier League title. Instead, the visitors were reliving their worst nightmare. A nightmare called Divock Origi.

His impact here was not quite as dramatic as the stoppage-time winner that he scored in this fixture in 2018, nor as emphatic as the two goals that he came up with in a 5-2 victory the following year. But this contribution may yet prove to be even more important.

Liverpool were not only meandering after an hour, they were giving up chances on the counter-attack. The situation was perilous. But Origi set up Mohamed Salah to cross for Andy Robertson’s breakthrough goal and then scored the second himself. Game over.

Jurgen Klopp’s smile was wide. It just hits different when the big Belgian makes the difference. Having already scored a stoppage-time winner at Wolves, this was his third Premier League goal of the season despite not starting once.

Klopp deserves credit for turning to him when he did. It was not a desperation move but a calculation that with Everton defending deep, his presence in the box was what was required. Introducing Luis Diaz at the same time, the changes changed the game.

Diaz will have many more magical moments at Anfield. Origi may not. His contract is up in the summer. The home supporters were grateful there was just one more gift for the road. The away supporters will just be glad that his derby days may now be over.
Adam Bate

Lukaku takes his chance in underrated cameo
“Show you really want it. Go and show that desire!”

Those were the instructions from Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after Romelu Lukaku put in a poor display in Chelsea’s 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in midweek.

In the Blues’ 1-0 win over West Ham, the Belgian forward only got 15 minutes or so to show his worth, but it looks like Lukaku heeded some of that advice.

Chelsea were lacking a bit of panache up front, with Kai Havertz playing passively and Timo Werner missing some good chances – but Lukaku ended up playing an understated role in getting the Blues’ eventual winner.

Christian Pulisic scored in the 90th minute but the real reason that goal went in came five minutes earlier. Lukaku had showed determination to get on to a loose ball ahead of Craig Dawson, who could only tug him back and concede a penalty.

The Hammers defender was given his marching orders for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and while Jorginho missed the resulting spot kick, Chelsea had more space to manoeuvre due to their man advantage.

The pressure eventually told for West Ham, who conceded when Pulisic struck home Marcos Alonso’s cross late on. But that goal came from Lukaku’s determination to get Chelsea that opportunity.

The Blues needed a focal point up front against the Hammers and Lukaku provided that when his side needed him most. Now it’s time for the Belgian to produce that more often.

The FA Cup final against Liverpool is just a few weeks away and the Belgian can stake a claim for a starting spot if he keeps that up.
Sam Blitz

West Ham’s focus clear
“I want the players to be ready.”

West Ham will be disappointed they didn’t cling on to avoid Pulisic’s late winner at Stamford Bridge, but there is a bigger picture for Hammers boss David Moyes and his side.

That was clearly evident when Moyes made six changes, with key players Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen named on the substitute’s bench. Moyes already has quite a depleted squad, especially in defence, and he could not afford any more headaches with West Ham’s European adventures set to continue this week.

The Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt is firmly on the mind of everyone associated with West Ham, and so it should be. Thursday’s first leg against the Bundesliga side is huge for the Hammers, especially with their route to the Champions League via the Premier League looking increasingly difficult.

Moyes described it as “one of the biggest games for the club in a long time”. However, despite their focus really being elsewhere, West Ham put in a decent show at Chelsea, and it may prove a worthwhile exercise for Moyes as many of his fringe players got useful minutes at what is a crucial time of the season.

Who knows when more injuries might strike and those fringe players need to step up? The minutes will help.

“With the game midweek I felt it was important [to change the team]. We have been in good shape and spirits all year. We shouldn’t be downbeat by today.”

It will not be difficult for West Ham to move on. Thursday’s game is what players dream about and it will be an occasion to savour under the lights in east London. And now, after the decisions taken by Moyes today, the West Ham squad will be in better shape for it.
Oliver Yew

The decision to sack Sean Dyche after 10 years was a huge risk by Burnley chairman Alan Pace, especially when it became apparent that there was no clear succession plan in place.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher described the move as a “joke”, adding on Twitter: “If you had given him a decent budget you would never have had a worry about getting relegated.”

However, Mike Jackson has breathed new life into the squad since stepping up from the U23s to takeover as caretaker manager, winning seven points from his first three games.

It remains to be seen whether Pace will hire a new permanent manager before the end of the season, but in the build up to the game against Wolves, some of the Burnley players made it clear they want Jackson to stay in place.

Midfielder Josh Brownhill said “why change if it’s not broken?” and it’s hard to argue with him.

The Burnley chairman has already taken a big gamble. That change was designed to jolt Burnley into life, but another roll of the dice could derail their bid for Premier League survival.

Pace should stick rather than twist on this occasion. Jackson has done enough to earn the role until the end of the season and while there are no assurances of safety, he is a safe bet to keep the Clarets performing for the final five games of the season.

After more than two weeks off since their last game, Sunday’s trip to relegation-threatened Burnley presented a perfect chance for Wolves to reignite their push for European qualification.

They looked the better of the two sides in the first half, which in fairness was partly down to the fact Burnley only had two full days of recovery compared to Wolves’ 15.

However, it was the same old story for Wolves. They dominated possession and found lots of space in between Burnley’s midfield and defence, but struggled in the final third.

Burnley 1-0 Wolves – Match report
How the teams lined up | Match stats
Even the return of Raul Jimenez after a two-match suspension couldn’t aide Wolves in their bid to become more potent offensively. The striker was missing on two occasions when Fabio Silva fired in dangerous crosses to the Burnley six-yard box.

Somehow, despite three defeats in their last four matches to sides beneath them in the table – Leeds, Newcastle, Burnley – Wolves remain just three points off seventh-placed West Ham and have a game in hand on their rivals.

There is still plenty of hope for Wolves with West Ham distracted by their Europa League campaign and Manchester United on an almighty slide.

Whether Wolves can make the most of it is a different matter.

Liverpool get the job done

25 April 2022
Comments Off on Liverpool get the job done

Liverpool moved back to within one point of Premier League leaders Manchester City and left neighbours Everton languishing in the bottom three after victory in the Merseyside derby.

Struggling Everton made Liverpool fight for their win with a well-organised and disciplined performance that will give them hope they can still avoid the drop but was not enough to deny Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple-chasing side.

Liverpool can find different ways to get the job done and after blowing Manchester United aside on Tuesday they demonstrated patience to finally break down Everton’s stubborn resistance in what could prove to be a priceless win.

The deadlock was broken after 62 minutes when Andy Robertson arrived at the far post in front of the Kop to head home Mo Salah’s cross.

Everton could not respond, although the outstanding Anthony Gordon shot across goal, and Liverpool wrapped up the win when substitute Divock Origi tormented the neighbours once again when he headed in Luis Diaz’s bicycle kick with six minutes left.

The loss means the Toffees end the day in the top-flight’s bottom three for the first time since 6 December 2019. They were last in the relegation zone this far into the season in 1998-99.
This was not the flowing, blistering Liverpool that effectively won the FA Cup semi-final in the first 45 minutes against Manchester City at Wembley and who dismantled a hapless Manchester United at Anfield.

Everton’s rearguard action and determination to disrupt Liverpool infuriated and frustrated Anfield in the first 45 minutes but eventually the dam broke and for all the visitors’ courage they were not able to hold out.

Manager Klopp may well take as much pleasure from how Liverpool were forced to dig deep and overcome Everton’s determined challenge as he would from the way they have swept so many teams aside this season.

Liverpool had to fight for control and, in truth, they were never in their normal level of command and still had to survive one or two anxious moments before the final whistle.

It puts the Reds right back in City’s rearview mirror after Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed Watford 5-1, and still on course for their ambition of adding the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup to the EFL Cup.

Liverpool now face Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield on Wednesday as firm favourites and their challenge continues to gather huge momentum.

MANCHESTER, England, Feb 13 (Reuters) – Liverpool closed the gap at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Burnley in difficult conditions on Sunday while Tottenham Hotspur slipped to a third consecutive league defeat as they succumbed 2-0 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Liverpool 3 Lille 0(Agg: 3-1): Liverpool kept alive their hopes of silverware this season with a 3-0 victory over Lille at Anfield to win their Europa League last-16 tie 3-1 on aggregate. Steven Gerrard’s ninth-minute penalty gave them the ideal start and Fernando Torres then struck twice in the second half.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg an early Liverpool goal was essential to ease the pressure and, watched by Argentina coach Diego Maradona, they produced just that. The much-maligned Lucas, returning to the side because of Alberto Aquilani’s illness, dribbled into the area and produced a tidy piece of skill to go past Adil Rami and draw the foul.

Referee Nicola Rizzoli pointed to the spot and Gerrard confidently fired home to level things up on aggregate.

Torres had two half-chances to double the lead in the next five minutes as first he cut in from the right at pace only to see his near-post shot deflected wide before then lofting a shot over from Javier Mascherano’s free-kick.

Despite going behind Lille still looked like they could be a danger on the counter-attack with Eden Hazard, goalscorer a week ago, and Ludovic Obraniak posing a threat from the flanks.

But right-back Glen Johnson was getting forward at every opportunity and when he found himself in the penalty area he hit a left-foot volley straight at goalkeeper Mickael Landreau.

Daniel Agger’s glancing header from Gerrard’s inswinging 31st-minute corner was eventually stopped by Landreau on the goalline after the ball got stuck between Dirk Kuyt and Franck Beria.

Lille came out after the break with more purpose and Jamie Carragher produced a perfectly-timed tackle to deny Rio Mavuba three minutes into the second half. But a minute later Liverpool seized control of the tie with an expert piece of finishing from Torres.

Ryan Babel hooked a ball out of defence with his right foot which looked more like a clearance than a pass but Rami, who had been given a torrid time by Torres, misjudged the bounce of the ball and it ballooned over him.

The Spain striker did not need a second invitation and he sped towards goal before dinking a shot past Landreau with the outside of his right foot. It was the first time he had scored in European competition since his goal at Anfield in the 3-1 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Chelsea on April 8th.

Liverpool’s advantage was only a slender one and that fragility was almost exposed in the 73rd minute when Obraniak’s free-kick picked out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the far post only for the substitute to bundle his shot into the ground and over the crossbar.

As the tie entered its final throes the anxiety began to grow as Liverpool were unsure whether to try to hold their lead or finish Lille off with a third goal. It almost came when Kuyt’s long-range strike was batted behind by Landreau.

But all the pressure was released when Torres followed up a rebound from Gerrard’s shot to score his second a minute before time and his fourth in his last two . It secured a second victory in an important week, with Manchester United to come at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney refuses to be Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has turned down the chance to be part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at Old Trafford. The 36-year-old man chose to stay at Derby County rather than return to the Premier League giants.

Reporting from Metro, Erik ten Hag has been confirmed as the new permanent manager of the Red Devils after signing a three-year contract, which will keep him in the Manchester United hot seat until June 2025.

Meanwhile, United are reportedly gathering candidates for a new coaching staff. Members who have been active since the reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will leave Old Trafford to make room for Ten Hag’s chosen ones.

The Athletic report claims the former captain and club’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney, is actually included in the list of candidates for Ten Hag’s new coaching staff at the Red Devils.

The former England international was proposed informally to take up the job at Old Trafford. However, Rooney refused the offer. According to Metro, the legend admits he will only leave Derby County if he gets the number one position at the club.

For information, Wayne Rooney’s club is currently in poor condition. The Rams were relegated from the Championship–Division 2 of the Premier League–to Division 3.

Despite that, Rooney still received praise for his efforts at Derby County. He is expected to remain in charge of the Rams next season, despite being linked with a position at Burnley and being invited to an interview with Everton following the sacking of Rafa Benitez earlier this year.

Rooney is not the only legend to be sent home during Erik ten Hag’s reign at Old Trafford. The former Dutch player, Robin van Persie, has also previously been widely linked with the Ajax Amsterdam tactician.

Reports say Erik Ten Hag held talks with Van Persie regarding his potential return to the Red Devils. Van Persie is a figure who had spent three years of his football career with Manchester United.

He successfully led the Red Devils to the Premier League title in 2013, after moving from Arsenal in a deal worth 22 million pounds. Van Persie’s slick record with Manchester United seems to be a strong reason behind the emergence of Erik ten Hag’s interest in the legend.

Moreover, the former Utrecht tactician did intend to bring in a figure experienced with MU, like Van Persie. Unfortunately, Van Persie currently holds a position in the Feyenoord U-16 squad. The Metro report on Thursday (21/4/2022) also claimed that the 38-year-old man was excluded from the list because he did not obtain a work permit.

On the other hand, Mitchell van de Gaag is still a name that is believed to be joining Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford. He is an assistant coach who worked with the bald-headed manager at Ajax Amsterdam.

For information, Van der Gaag had a heart attack on the sidelines while dealing with Belenenses in September 2013. This condition earned him a defibrillator implant – a device that was also attached to Christian Eriksen after the Euro 2020 incident.

However, Van der Gaag seems to be in a stable condition now. He has regular medical check-ups and has been an influential figure in Ten Hag’s success at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Mirror reports that Ten Hag has revealed his intention to the club to bring Van der Gaag to Manchester United.

MU situation
Reporting from Metro, United are facing a difficult situation since Sir Alex Ferguson resigned from his position almost a decade ago. The Red Devils have gone five years without a trophy and have hired and fired five managers.

This season, Cristiano Ronaldo and his friends have not been able to secure the top four positions. The MU squad was thrown to sixth place in the Premier League standings with 54 points, three points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur, who occupied the top four.

The club managed by Ralf Rangnick also just suffered a crushing 0–4 defeat to Liverpool in the English League on Wednesday (20/4/2022). The Reds’ goals were scored by Luis Diaz (‘5), Mohamed Salah (’22 & ’85), and Sadio Mane (’68).

Manchester United then have to face Arsenal who are also fighting for a place in the top four. The Red Devils will travel to the headquarters of the Gunners in the Premier League match

Thomas Tuchel on Expected Goals, unexpected goals and how to stop individual errors costing Chelsea

“It’s very untypical for any team who fights for top three to do these kind of mistakes.” Thomas Tuchel talks to Sky Sports about searching for answers to Chelsea’s sudden defensive fragility. Watch Chelsea vs West Ham live on Sky Sports Premier League from 1pm on Sunday; kick-off 2pm.

Thomas Tuchel on Expected Goals, unexpected goals and how to stop individual errors costing Chelsea | Football News | Sky Sports

Two days on from Chelsea’s bizarre beating at the hands of London rivals Arsenal, Thomas Tuchel is still struggling to account for the uncharacteristic errors made by his usually watertight team.

Arsenal hadn’t scored in three games but hit four at Stamford Bridge, with Andreas Christensen and the usually reliable Cesar Azpilicueta among the Blues giving Mikel Arteta’s men a helping hand.

“It was very strange to analyse,” he tells Sky Sports at Chelsea’s Cobham training base. “The mix of individual mistakes and then suddenly very good pictures of, for example, counter-pressing and high pressing and ball recoveries in the opponent’s half.

“We had so many good pictures. We had the feeling we did many things right. Everything was fine. And then we concede a very strange goal, doing many mistakes in the build up to the goal.

“Especially when it comes from the experienced players who are not normally involved in this and are not typically involved it.

I don’t have an answer right now [for the individual mistakes]. The decisions we take are the right decisions, it’s about the executions. But they’re not so technically demanding that we think, ‘well that was maybe a bit too much’. It’s about speed, hitting the ball, over-hitting, under-hitting, a bit of slapstick in one-on-one, funny bounces… strange

“Suddenly you try to see a pattern over the last home matches but maybe it’s not. Maybe it was a kind of freak result. It feels like a pattern because we had the Real Madrid and Brentford games.”

That trio of back-to-back home defeats contribute to the fact Chelsea, who had kept six clean sheets in nine games prior to the March international break, have since let in 13 goals in six matches.

It’s an alarming drop off which has led to honest meetings between coaches and players.

A stern telling off after the Brentford and Real Madrid results sparked a brief rejuvenation, which saw Chelsea win 6-0 at Southampton, almost come up with a huge comeback at the Bernabeu, and then reach the FA Cup final with a win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Tuchel will be hoping the post-match meeting from the Arsenal defeat can have the same impact.

“We’ve conceded 11 goals in three home matches, we can’t pretend everything gets solved by itself,” said Tuchel.

“We have to talk about it. It’s not like pointing fingers and shouting and being angry all the time, it’s just being honest. The players get their feedback – they also get their feedback when they do good -and at some point we need to give them our point of view to be on the same page and be clear where we need to improve.”

Hamilton and Williams join Broughton bid for Chelsea
Chelsea 2-4 Arsenal – Match report and highlights
Tuchel’s analysis also includes a deep dive into the data. Before we sat down, he’d referenced the team’s Expected Goals (xG) figures and the stats recording their number of errors leading to goals in his press conference, unprompted.

Interestingly, his xG comments came the day after Ralph Hasenhuttl had used the system to defend Southampton’s performance in their defeat at Burnley. What was a niche and widely-mocked metric when it first emerged has now become a go-to tool for Premier League managers.

“We knew about it for a long time and now it is out there in public, which I think is good because it gives you a more realistic view on your performance,” said Tuchel, when asked about how xG helps him in his work.

“You can lose games in football by being unlucky and you can win games with luck and the result does very often not reflect what happened on the pitch. So it gives you a clear view: how many chances you allow, how many shots in which quality you allow. It’s good to have that figure.

“Like with every number, the more you look into it you find your benchmarks. So we know how over a season or half a season what the level of Expected Goals is if you play in a certain structure and if this is suddenly higher we ask ourselves, ‘what’s happening within the structure?’

https://articlepedia.xyz/how-to-stop-individual-errors-costing-chelsea/

https://articlepedia.xyz/thomas-tuchel-on-expected-goals/

“If we concede double the amount we are tempted to say we’re in a very unlucky streak at the moment because obviously the quality that we give away is not enough to concede so much and still we concede. That’s hard to take.”

Indeed, in Chelsea’s Premier League and Champions League games since club football resumed after the March internationals, their xG figure suggests they would normally let in eight goals for the quality of chances they’ve given up. They’ve let in 13.

In the Premier League, their goals against column was around nine goals better than it may have been from their first 28 games, according to the xG figures of their opponents. In the last three matches, they’re three goals worse off.

Those numbers underline how mistakes at the back are costing Chelsea – although giving away needless goals or opportunities has been a persistent problem for much of the season.

According to Opta, only relegation-threatened Everton and Watford have made more errors leading to goals than Chelsea.

“It’s very untypical, in any league, for any team in the top of the table, who fights for top three to do these kind of mistakes,” Tuchel said shaking his head.

“We have a game like Man Utd at home for example, where it’s 0-0, we come from a good streak of results, we’re the dominant team, you feel like it’s a matter of time before we score and win this game and finish it off and suddenly it’s a big mistake and we’re 1-0 behind and it makes things very complicated.”

A Jorginho penalty at least rescued a point for Chelsea in that fixture back in November but a week later at the London Stadium, the Italian’s bad back-pass for Edouard Mendy led to the goalkeeper giving away a penalty, which helped West Ham set the platform for Arthur Masuaku’s unlikely cross-shot winner.

The return fixture – live on Sky Sports – offers an opportunity to make amends but Tuchel, who brought up his 50th Premier League game in charge of Chelsea against Arsenal, is keen to keep perspective on what his team have achieved so far this season.

We have had some fantastic experiences this season,” he said. “We won finals, titles, we were fighting for the Carabao Cup to the final game, now a FA Cup final, we were on a good run in the Champions League and did an almost epic game in the Bernabeu…

“So there are a lot of positive things in there and it feels like it and we need to take care now that we don’t add a note to it that overshadows all that.

“We struggled with Corona, and we struggled with long-term injuries and we gave our very best and for me personally I still feel super happy to be here and it’s an amazing group of players to work with.

“We have our things to solve and since the international break it’s a bit of a rollercoaster which is very surprising because it never was like this, so we need to deal with another feature in our story.

“[The West Ham games is] a chance to get back on track. A very strong opponent again. They will not give in, they will not make life easy for us, so it’s a big challenge to overcome this inconsistency at the moment and show personality but also a moment to stick together as a group and stay positive.”

Brentford 0-0 Tottenham: Spurs slip up again against unlucky Bees

Tottenham missed the chance to reclaim fourth place from Arsenal after a disappointing goalless draw at Brentford that saw Antonio Conte’s side fail to have a shot on target.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney saw two headers hit the woodwork as he struck the bar (18) in the first half before heading against the post in added-time (90+1).

Spurs also needed a Harry Kane clearance off the line from Pontus Jansson’s header (66) to ensure they did not suffer a second consecutive defeat after last weekend’s home loss to Brighton.

Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen, who was facing his former side for the first time since leaving Spurs two years ago, also went close twice for the home side.
The goalless draw means Spurs are fifth, two points behind Arsenal who moved fourth following their victory over Manchester United on Saturday.
Both sides have five games left to play, including the north London derby on May 12 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on Sky Sports.
Brentford, meanwhile, are now unbeaten in their last four games with Thomas Frank’s side up to 11th in the table.

And the pressure applied by Mikel Arteta’s side, coupled with last week’s damaging home defeat to Brighton, saw Tottenham start nervously as Brentford, buoyed by three straight wins, took control of the game.

Eriksen created Brentford’s best chance of the half as his corner was headed against the bar by Toney in the 18th minute.

Spurs were so underwhelming in the opening 45 minutes that their most threatening attempt came from Rodrigo Bentancur’s wild effort (28) that went well over.

Conte would surely have given his team a stern half-time team talk and it appeared to work as Spurs began the second half well, mounting more attacks with Kane having an effort (52) deflected over the bar by Bees skipper Jansson.

It was roles reversed 14 minutes later as Kane cleared Jansson’s header off the line. The rebound fell to Eriksen whose low shot from a tight angle was saved down low by Lloris and then scrambled away by Ben Davies.

Eriksen’s effort was his second in as many minutes, a shot from distance deflecting just wide of Lloris’ post.

Both teams came close to finding a winner in added-time as Toney hit the post from Eriksen’s free-kick in the 91st minute, with Bryan Mbeumo putting the rebound in the side-netting.

A minute later, Kane then attempted an audacious scissor-kick that whistled just wide of David Raya’s post.

But it was a rare moment of quality in a poor Spurs performance that has handed the initiative to their north London rivals Arsenal in the race for Champions League football.

One of the big talking points ahead of the game was Eriksen potentially lining up for the first time against the club where he made his mark in English football.

It was always going to be a poignant affair, especially given how unlikely a proposition that seemed when the playmaker collapsed while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

Eriksen told Sky Sports News ahead of the game that the occasion would be a special one, and he produced a performance to match it.

Given licence to roam by head coach Thomas Frank, Eriksen was at the heart of Brentford’s attacking endeavours, pulling the strings and creating chances for the forwards. It was like he had never been away from the Premier League.

“I was playing Tottenham for the first time since I left, but it was lovely,” he said afterwards

“Of course the first pass is always the chosen one, seeing what happens today, and the first one went well and then after it’s ‘oh let’s play’ and the nerves are gone.”

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

“[Eriksen] is obviously fantastic. I think we are all happy he is playing football again and he’s enjoying it. You can see him playing with a smile.

“He played a good game today but I would say I think it was the whole team.

“I think against a full-strength Tottenham side and we have a lot of injuries and we had to move players around.

“[We were] without our normal two centre-backs, normal wing-back and normal number six – one of our most consistent players in Christian Norgaard – we kept Tottenham to more-or-less nothing.

“The front two of Harry Kane and [Heung-Min] Son, the most dangerous in the Premier League, were kept very quiet. Plus, we were good on the ball and we created chances. I think it’s an extremely impressive [performance].”

Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte:

“It was a tough game. For sure, it was very difficult. They are a very physical team and they tried to exploit set pieces in a very dangerous way. I think defensively we were good but at the same time, I think we can do much better with the ball to create more chances to score. The intensity was very high and there were many tackles but we knew what type of game we were coming to play. It’s a draw and I think it’s important when you cannot win, you take one point, and we did that.

“We have to try to give our best [to finish in the top four]. Now we are in this race and we have to try to stay in it, but we know it is very difficult. We have to live this situation with great enthusiasm, and today was a good draw.”

Top-four race ‘a pillow fight’ compared to heavyweight title battle
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp:

“The performance wasn’t good enough. I was really surprised at how poor Spurs were. The two results that they have just had back-to-back are just not good enough.

“They have been playing exceptional football [under Conte], but if you look at the title race, that is Ali-Frazier. But if you look at the top four race, it’s a pillow fight.

“There are going to be so many mistakes, teams throwing away points, that’s how it is going to be. I don’t look at either side with a great deal of confidence. And I look at that game [that Spurs have] away at Liverpool, and I think that’s where everything will be won or lost, the title and the top four.”

Only Chelsea (18) have won more points in Premier League London derbies than Brentford (15) this season, while the Bees have conceded fewer goals in such games than any other side (7).
No side has won fewer points in Premier League London derbies this season than Tottenham (10), while they have scored fewer goals in such games than any other side (9).
Tottenham have failed to register a shot on target in a match for the fourth time in the Premier League this season, twice as many as any other side.
Tottenham have now had two 0-0 draws in the Premier League this season, having had just one 0-0 last season. They last had more in a single campaign in 2015-16 (3).
Since his Premier League debut for Brentford in February, no player has created more chances for the Bees than Christian Eriksen (14), with the Dane creating a game-high four chances today.

What’s next?

Tottenham face Leicester at home on Sunday, May 1 – kick-off 2pm – and that is followed by two huge matches for Antonio Conte’s side as they go to title-chasing Liverpool on May 7 and then host top-four rivals Arsenal in the north London derby on May 12, live on Sky Sports.

Next for Brentford is a trip to Old Trafford, as Thomas Frank’s side play Manchester United in the Monday Night Football on May 2, live on Sky Sports; kick-off 8pm.

Mariupol: Videos appear to show dead civilians

Comments Off on Mariupol: Videos appear to show dead civilians

The graphic videos, posted on social media in recent days, come as the United Nations has confirmed that it is investigating hundreds of allegations of killing of civilians during the invasion of Ukraine.

We’ve been examining these latest videos for clues about what might have happened.

In one video, we counted 18 bodies – all appear to be wearing civilian clothing and there are no weapons visible. One body is lying next to a bag of shopping at a bus stop, another next to a damaged car.

Looking at all four videos, we counted 23 bodies in total.

The videos also show damage to buildings, knocked down power cables and debris on the road. Civilians can also be seen walking past the bodies.

http://ptits.net/boards/t/76838/the-ukrainian-president-said-russian-troops-had-stolen-something-that-resembles-a-normal-life-from-ukrainians.aspx

Where were they filmed?

The videos are all filmed near the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works in northern Mariupol – the BBC has confirmed the locations.

The bodies are lying along Boika Avenue, which is next to the plant.

One is filmed by Patrick Lancaster, a former US navy intelligence veteran who has been posting videos from Russian-controlled areas in eastern Ukraine on his social accounts since 2014.

Mr Lancaster has frequently appeared as a guest on Russian state TV, as well as US conspiracy website InfoWars.

Another video is filmed by Italian journalist Vittorio Nicola Rangeloni. Mr Rangeloni, who lives in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, began posting videos from Mariupol in late March.

The third and fourth videos were uploaded by Russian agency ANNA News and the pro-Kremlin Telegram channel, Signal.

When were the videos filmed?
It is not clear when the videos were filmed. However, we found that the earliest one online was the ANNA News report, which was uploaded on 15 April.

The earliest appearance of two of the remaining videos could be traced to 18 April and 19 April respectively.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces had been in control of the area where the videos were filmed until 28 March.

It says Russian forces claimed control of this area on 7 April but it also notes that the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that hundreds of Ukrainian marines surrendered at the Ilyich metal plant on 13 April.

We asked the US firm Maxar for satellite images of Boika Avenue going back to March. It provided one from 11 April but no bodies are clearly visible in it.

Do we know how the people died?
Several passers-by interviewed in the videos said they were told the victims were killed by a Ukrainian sniper, targeting people passing along the road.

In the video filmed by Mr Rangeloni, one man says: “I’m in shock, I’m shocked. They say a sniper was sitting there, people were going to get their work documents and he was shooting them.”

Another man, asked by the journalist if there was a Ukrainian sniper, replies that the Ukrainians were in the “factory” at that time – referring to the steelworks alongside the road.

However, neither of them says they witnessed any of the killings. The BBC has not been able to verify their claims but has contacted the Ukrainian and Russian authorities for comment.

In the video taken by Mr Lancaster, a man who is interviewed takes the opportunity to launch into a lengthy denunciation of the Ukrainian government, and praises President Putin.

We used facial recognition analysis on the interviewees in the videos – using a computer algorithm to compare their images to a huge number of photos of people’s faces – to see whether they had featured in other videos during the conflict but could not find any matches.

We also approached Mr Rangeloni and Mr Lancaster for comment. Mr Lancaster said: “Neither myself or that man [I interviewed] said who killed those people as that area was a huge hotbed of fighting”.

What about the physical evidence?
We showed the videos to a former military sniper who wished to remain anonymous.

He told us: “The wounds are not consistent with sniper shots.”

He said he would expect to see a lot more blood from shots to the head, referring to one victim whose face shows signs of injuries to an eye.

We also contacted several pathologists. Working out how these people were killed, when and by whom, is further complicated by the fact that only a few of the bodies have their faces visible.

Dr Victor Weedn, a forensic pathology consultant, said: “The bodies scattered over the roadways near a factory appear to have all died about the same time.

“The image is of clothed bodies at a distance and does not allow a definitive determination of the cause of death, but it is suspected they were shot, probably in the head.”

Dr Carl Wigren, a forensic pathologist, also concluded the victims had died at “very near the same time” but, again, could not be definitive about the cause of death.

He noted the lack of blood around nearly all the bodies and said this and the “lack of visible injuries in fully-clothed individuals makes me think that this was the result of possibly blunt force injury” caused by the shock waves from explosions.

He said, of one body – with a decomposed face – that although it appeared to have been there for several weeks, flesh missing from the face could have been the result of an animal scavenging.

We will continue to investigate these videos and will update this article when we have more information.

Safety nets, football: Elijah Hicks’ Intercept Poverty Foundation flourishes

23 April 2022
Comments Off on Safety nets, football: Elijah Hicks’ Intercept Poverty Foundation flourishes

started as a conversation with his dad.

photo of Elijah Hicks

Distraught by the lasting economic and social hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, former Cal safety Elijah Hicks sought to alleviate the burden his community was forced to bear. His desire to offer refuge from the constant pressure to provide did not stem from just a merely sympathetic perspective: Hicks is one of 11 children.

Growing up in Long Beach, California, the cost of living was high. His family’s financial constraints limited the opportunities available to him and his siblings. Tuition, transportation, sustenance — the expenses added up. Hicks then found himself attending three different high schools and living with four other households besides his own in order to maximize his academic and athletic potential.

That is all to say, despite his athletic scholarship, despite his reputation as an elite Cal football player and despite his current aspirations for the NFL: Hicks understands what it means to struggle. But he also understands what it means to give — to open your home to someone in need, to be kind and to show compassion.

So, after a conversation with his dad, Hicks started the Intercept Poverty Foundation to offer financial assistance to students distressed by the pandemic.

It sounds simple to start an organization and have everything just fall seamlessly into place. For the most part, that is the generalization the public so readily makes. But building a nonprofit from the ground up is no easy feat, especially when you are building your knowledge base up at the same time.

“The most challenging part was, I really didn’t know what I was doing,” Hicks said. “I had to learn as I went. That’s probably one of the best parts, and that’s what I’m still doing — learning as I go. But when you want to do something, you find a way to make it happen.”

From flyering on Sproul Plaza to volunteering at UC Berkeley’s food pantry, Hicks was instrumental to the way his foundation took off. After collaborating with current and former student-athletes Terrell Burgess and Chase Claypool, Intercept Poverty’s COVID-19 Campaign in partnership with No Kid Hungry reached its goal of raising over $65,000 in just three days. The funds were distributed to local charities with the mission of providing food for children who were unable to access school meals during limited in-person learning.

The Intercept Poverty Foundation is currently awarding emergency grants of $500 to $700 to UC Berkeley students who need assistance with rent, medical bills, childcare, transportation and food. Though the funds are currently limited to local residents, Hicks is excited about expanding the reach of Intercept Poverty in the future.

“Slowly, if I get more help, (I want) to make it a more nationwide program,” Hicks said. “Start reaching out to other schools and helping student-athletes bring awareness on their campus, as well as have student-athletes be the driving force of that program at their school.”

The sky is truly the limit for Hicks and the Intercept Poverty Foundation. After all, conversations manifest into realities. Conversations manifest into change. And, perhaps most importantly, conversations manifest into purpose.
