Justin Bieber reveals facial paralysis after shows cancelled

Singer Justin Bieber has revealed he is suffering from facial paralysis after cancelling shows this week.

The 28-year-old said in an Instagram video that the condition is due to a diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

“As you can see this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face… So there’s full paralysis on this side of my face,” he said.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near someone’s ears, say medical experts.

Earlier this week, Bieber’s Justice World Tour – which began in February – announced three shows would be postponed.

“It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis,” the Canada-born singer said in the three-minute video, indicating the right side of his face.

He asked for his fans to be patient, and said of his forthcoming shows that he is “physically, obviously, not capable of doing them”.

He also smiled and blinked, showing his 240 million followers how the right side of his face did not move.

“This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but, obviously, my body’s telling me I’ve got to slow down,” he said. “I hope you guys understand. I’ll be using this time to just rest and relax and get back to a hundred percent so that I can do what I was born to do.”

Bieber added that he has been doing facial exercises to “get back to normal”, but that he does not know how long it will take to recover.

He had been due to play in Washington DC and Toronto earlier this week, with concerts also planned in New York and Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the US: “In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear.”

The Mayo Clinic says that for most people, the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome are temporary, but can become permanent.

The inability for patients to close one eyelid can also cause eye pain and blurred vision, the organisation says, adding that it is most common in people over 60 years old.

In March, the singer’s wife, Hailey Bieber, was admitted to hospital due to a blood clot in her brain.

She later said she had suffered a stroke and had undergone surgery to close a hole in her heart.

Justin Bieber has just had to cancel a series of his shows on his latest Justice tour because of a virus that has caused “full paralysis” on one side of his face. The 28-year-old star posted a video on Instagram revealing his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis, which has caused nerve damage to his ear. The condition is usually identified by painful rashes around the ear, face, or mouth, and during the video, Justin revealed he was suffering from a “pretty serious” case of it.

After cancelling his upcoming shows in Toronto, Washington DC, and New York, the Peaches singer opened up about the diagnosis: “It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear in my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.” He added: “As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move, so there’s full paralysis on this side of my face.”

He also addressed the shows he’s had to cancel, saying: “For those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious as you can see.”

During the three-minute video, and after telling his 240 million Instagram followers that he wishes “this wasn’t the case” but “obviously [his] body is telling [him] he has to slow down”, Justin revealed how he has been doing facial exercises to try and regain movement. And after adding that it will take some time to recover, he went on to say “I hope you guys understand, and I’ll be using this time to just rest and relax and get back to 100% so I can do what I was born to do. But in the meantime, this ain’t it.”

Naturally, the singer has received an influx of support from both fans, celebrity friends, and obviously his wife, Hailey Bieber, who wrote: “I love you baby.” Other famous faces included Scooter Braun, Romeo Beckham, Kehlani, and DJ Khaled.

Get well soon, Justin!

LOS ANGELES — Justin Bieber says a rare disorder that paralyzed half of the superstar performer’s face is the reason behind his tour postponement.

The multi-Grammy winner is suffering from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, he said in video he posted Friday on Instagram. The syndrome causes facial paralysis and affects nerves in the face through a shingles outbreak.

Bieber’s post comes after he cancelled his shows in Toronto and Washington, D.C. The singer demonstrated in the video that he could barely move one side of his face, calling the ailment “pretty serious.”

“For those frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously not capable of doing them,” he said. The singer added, “My body’s telling me I’ve got to slow down. I hope you guys understand.”

Bieber said he’s unsure how long he’ll take to heal. But he appeared positive about making a full recovery through rest and therapy.

“I’ll be using this time to just rest and relax and get back to a hundred percent, so that I can do what I was born to do,” he said.

In March, Biebers’ wife, Hailey Bieber, was hospitalized for a blood clot to her brain.
